Mark O’Brien is an Irish chef and a contestant on MasterChef: The Professionals 2026 on BBC One. He is the chef patron at Willy’s in Margate, Kent. He previously worked at Coppinger Row in Dublin, The Dairy in London’s Clapham, and Samphire in Whitstable. Mark also operated his own Carolina Style Barbecue restaurant “Snake Oil Barbecue” in Margate.
Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Mark spent a few years at University College Dublin studying medicinal chemistry and chemical biology before stepping back to pursue a career in restaurants. He took a short professional culinary course in Dublin’s Cooks Academy in 2012 which gave him the perfect grounding to land his first chef position at Coppinger Row in Dublin.
He then worked with Robin Gill at the Dairy in London’s Clapham. During filming of MasterChef: The Professionals 2026, Mark ran his own American BBQ pop-up, Snake Oil Barbecue in Margate, and is now head chef at Willy’s in Margate. He previously worked at provenance-led establishments, including Samphire in Whitstable.
The Dublin native was inspired to become a chef by his uncle, who worked as a chef and loved to cook. “He bought me Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain when I was probably too young to be reading it, but it changed everything,” he told the BBC.

Dublin-born chef Mark O’Brien is a contestant on MasterChef: The Professionals 2026 on BBC One. The Irish chef has impressed judges Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti with his “fire-led” cooking, combining high-quality meats with techniques learned from his travels in the USA.
Mark is one of three chefs competing in the finals of MasterChef: The Professionals 2026. He will be up against two other talented chefs: Luke Emmess, head chef at the Wykeham Arms in Winchester, and private chef Gareth Baty.
Posting on Instagram ahead of the MasterChef: The Professionals finals week, Mark said: “Crazy to think that it has all led to this. The most intense and exciting experience of my life and I couldn’t imagine a better group of chefs to be with all along the way. Thanks to everyone who has reached out over the last few weeks and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.”
