María Hernández is a Spanish professional golfer. She currently competes on the U.S based LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour. She began playing golf at the age of 12 years old. María graduated from Ortega Y Gasset, while there she won the 2005 European Amateur Ladies Championship, the 2005 Mediterranean Games, and the Mediterranean Games as an individual. María was a member of the European Amateur Ladies Championship teams.
She played her collegiate golf at Purdue University. While at Purdue, Hernández won 13 times. In 2008, Hernández won the Big Ten Conference Championship and was named the Purdue Female Athlete of the Year. In 2007 and 2008, she was a two-time Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. While with the Spanish National Team, Hernandez has been a five-time European Team Championship gold medalist.
Hernández turned professional in June 2009 and played on LPGA Final Qualifying Tournaments where she finished 6th and earned Priority List Category 11 for the 2010 LPGA season. She qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt. During her rookie season, Hernández won the Ladies Slovak Open on the Ladies European Tour. The win was her first and the only professional victory, she won it on May 30, 2010, after defeating Australian Kristie Lynn Smith by 1 stroke.
In 2014, she played in 19 events and made cuts in only three. Hernández was runner-up in the 2014 Lacoste Ladies Open de France, she lost by one stroke to fellow Spanish professional Azahara Muñoz. Hernández graduated from Purdue University, where she majored in business administration. When she is not on the golf course, she enjoys soccer, skiing, and watching movies.
