Margaret Garnett is a Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY). She was nominated by President Joe Biden (Democratic Party) on July 11, 2023, to a seat vacated by Vincent Louis Briccetti.

She was confirmed to the Manhattan federal court on November 28, 2023, when the U.S. Senate voted 49-46 after Sen. Chuck Schumer recommended her for the position and championed her nomination. She received commission on January 9, 2024.

Judge Garnett graduated with a B.A. in Government and English from the University of Notre Dame in 1992. She went on to earn an M.A. in Political Science and an M.Phil from Yale University in 1995 and 1997, respectively. She earned her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 2000.

After graduation, Garnett started her career at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a major New York law firm, in 2000. In 2004, she became a clerk for Judge Gerard E. Lynch, Paul J. Kellner Professor Emeritus of Law at Columbia Law and, at the time, a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of New York. She went on to become a federal prosecutor.

In 2018, she was appointed a commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation and concurrently served as Executive Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice in the New York Attorney General’s office.

In 2021, as her term heading the city’s anti-corruption agency was ending, newly appointed U.S. Attorney Damian Williams asked her to return to the federal prosecutor’s office as the deputy for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Garnett received the Justice Department’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance, as well as the 2016 Stimson Medal, an honor the New York City Bar Association bestows on four outstanding assistant U.S. attorneys in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York each year.

Margaret M. Garnett was born in 1971 in West Point, New York, U.S. She is the granddaughter of two generals and the daughter of a sixth-generation West Point graduate.

“I was born in the Southern District of New York, in West Point Army Hospital,” Garnett revealed. “My father was teaching there, at the time, after having, himself, been the sixth consecutive generation of our family to graduate from West Point. Both of my parents grew up as military kids, too, and so, I learned early from my parents, my grandparents, and my great-grandparents, the values of duty, service, and love of country.”
