Leanza Cornett (born Eva Leanza Cornett) was an American television personality and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Florida 1992 and Miss America 1993. After being crowned Miss America, she’s recognized as the first beauty queen to adopt AIDS awareness and prevention as her platform.
In addition to her pageant victories, Leanza sang in the Christian Music Group “Area Code” in the early ’90s, performed as Ariel in Walt Disney World MGM Studios’ “Voyage of the Little Mermaid Show,” and held a career as a network TV broadcaster. She served as a host for several television shows including Entertainment Tonight, according to her IMDB profile. She also made appearances in television shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Weeds and Saved by the Bell: The New Class.

Kurtz said in a news release on Monday, “Leanza Cornett, Jacksonville’s own Miss Florida 1992 and Miss America 1993, is recovering from a fall that required a decompressive craniectomy, performed to relieve pressure, treat brain swelling and manage bleeding. Doctors cannot speculate on the time Leanza may need to move through this phase of recovery as every brain injury is different.”
A post shared on Oct. 18 to Leanza’s Circle of Love Facebook page said, “She sustained an enormous blow to the back of her head. The surgery she had on Tuesday was to stop the bleeding in her brain. Right now there is some continued bleeding and swelling. Brain injuries are not black and white. We have to just take this day by day. She has an incredible medical team taking care of her.” It is still unclear how Cornett sustained the head injury.
