Susan Crawford is a circuit court judge in Dane County and a justice-elect of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She was first elected Wisconsin circuit judge in Dane County in 2018. She previously served as an assistant attorney general in the Iowa and Wisconsin Departments of Justice.

Judge Crawford’s career began as an Assistant Attorney General with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where she took on some of the state’s toughest criminal cases. As the director of criminal appeals, she built strong relationships with prosecutors, public defenders, and victim advocates in every corner of Wisconsin.

After serving as a prosecutor for nearly a decade, she continued her public service in leadership positions at multiple state agencies, including the Department of Corrections and Department of Natural Resources, before being named chief legal counsel to former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle. She also worked as an assistant attorney general under Doyle.

Following her service in state government, Judge Crawford became a private practice attorney, where she protected voting and workers’ rights, and represented Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to defend access to reproductive health care.

Judge Crawford currently sits on Dane County Circuit Court Branch 1. According to her campaign website, she has presided over tough trials, including homicide, sexual assault, and domestic violence cases.

Judge Susan Crawford, who was endorsed by the Democratic Party, won the Wisconsin Supreme Court race on Tuesday April 1, 2025, defeating Brad Schimel, a former Republican attorney general and conservative judge from Waukesha county.

Crawford defeated Republican-backed Brad Schimel in a race that broke records for spending, was the highest-turnout Wisconsin Supreme Court election ever and maintained a liberal majority on the court, The Associated Press reported. Schimel was endorsed by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.

Schimel received $25 million in campaign support from Musk. Musk even traveled to Wisconsin two days before the election to personally hand over $1 million checks to two voters. Through his super PAC, Musk underwrote an $11.5 million ground game that targeted voters with messages urging them to help President Trump by supporting Judge Schimel.

A separate organization with Musk ties spent $7.7 million on television advertising, according to AdImpact, a media-tracking firm. Musk also offered Wisconsinites $100 each to sign a petition in opposition to “activist judges,” The New York Times reported. By Tuesday, his super PAC was offering voters $50 to post a picture of a Wisconsin resident outside a polling place.

“Today, Wisconsinites fended off an unprecedented attack on our democracy, our fair elections and our Supreme Court,” she said in her victory speech on Tuesday night. “Wisconsin stood up and said loudly that justice does not have a price. Our courts are not for sale.”
