Lawrence Vandyke is a circuit judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was appointed to the court by President Donald Trump in 2019. After a cloture vote, his nomination was confirmed by the Senate and received his commission in January 2020.

Prior to that appointment, he served as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the United States Department of Justice. Before that, he served consecutively as the Solicitor General of two western states – Nevada and Montana.

At the beginning of his legal career, he worked as an attorney in the Appellate and Constitutional Issues practice group at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, LLP. Following his first year at the firm, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Janice Rogers Brown of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (2006-2007) and then returned to the firm.

Judge VanDyke attended Oklahoma Christian University before earning an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Montana State University in 1997 and later earned a Master of Construction Engineering Management in 2000. He worked in his family’s construction company and earned a Bachelor of Theology from Bear Valley Bible Institute.

Judge VanDyke attended Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of both the Harvard Law Review and Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 2005 and became an appellate attorney.
