Joel Greenberg Biography – Joel Greenberg Wiki
Joel Greenberg (born Joel Micah Greenberg) is a former Seminole County Tax Collector. He rose to prominence in Central Florida politics in 2016 when he upset Ray Valdes, who was Seminole County’s tax collector for nearly three decades. His tenure was embroiled in controversy. Months after taking office, he began allowing employees to carry guns, and then in December 2017, while wearing a tax collector badge that looked like a law enforcement shield, he pulled over and confronted a driver for speeding, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Officials with the Seminole State Attorney’s Office declined to press charges.
A 2019 Orlando Sentinel investigation revealed Greenberg had spent $3.5 million in consultant contracts, salaries to friends and associates, including giving a combined $644,000 to three of his groomsmen and another $677,000 to a campaign adviser. An audit released in December 2020 showed Greenberg wasted about $1 million in taxpayer funds, including buying body armor, weapons, ammunition and a drone.
In June 2020, a raid of his home in Heathrow uncovered several fake IDs. He was also accused of using his access as an elected official to look up information about a minor victim in the Florida Driver and Vehicle Information Database known as “DAVID,” including the victim’s photo and driver identification number.
He resigned on June 24, 2020, the day after he was arrested at his home by federal agents. He currently faces 14 federal charges, including allegations that he stalked a political opponent, illegally used a state database to create fake IDs and s_x-trafficked a minor.
According to the indictment, Greenberg engaged in a course of conduct that caused and attempted to cause substantial emotional distress to a political opponent who worked at a school located in the Middle District of Florida. As part of that course of conduct, Greenberg caused letters to be sent to the school where the employee worked. The letters falsely represented that they had been sent by an anonymous “very concerned student” of the school who had information that the school employee had engaged in sexual misconduct with a particular student, which Greenberg knew was false.
Greenberg also caused a Facebook account to be set up that claimed to belong to a “very concerned teacher” at the school where the school employee had worked. Greenberg caused postings to be made using that account that falsely alleged that the school employee had engaged in sexual misconduct with a student. Greenberg also caused an imposter Twitter account to be set up using the name and photograph of the school employee, without that person’s knowledge, consent, or authorization. Greenberg caused postings to be made using that account that falsely represented that the school employee was a segregationist and in favor of white supremacy.
In August 2020, Greenberg was also charged with s_x trafficking related to a girl between 14 and 17 years old. Out on bond awaiting trial, Greenberg was then arrested again in February 2021 for breaking curfew to look for his wife, Abby Greenberg, in South Florida, according to authorities. Greenberg is currently at the Orange County jail awaiting his trial scheduled to begin in mid-June, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
