Jeffrey Karp is a judge of the Superior Court of Massachusetts. He previously served as Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker (Republican Party) on April 21, 2017, filling the seat vacated by The Honorable Richard E. Welch, III.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Karp was a private practitioner in Newburyport since 2011, where he concentrated in criminal defense, domestic relations and commercial litigation matters.
Prior to his private practice, Karp was Associate at Newman & Newman, P.C. from 2001 to 2012, where he advised and represented clients in civil, criminal and domestic relations and litigation.
Before that, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office from 1995 to 2001, and Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit from 1999-2001 during which he supervised the prosecution of all domestic violence cases in Suffolk Superior Court.
Karp has conducted approximately one hundred trials during his career concerning diverse legal matters as first degree murder, construction disputes, and custody disputes. He began his legal career in 1993 as Associate at Morrison, Mahoney & Miller, Boston.
Prior to practicing law, Karp was a Certified Public Accountant and Senior Accountant at Price Waterhouse in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his B.A. in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1987 and went on to earn his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 1993. Karp was raised in Malden and attended Malden Public Schools.
Judge Karp has served on the Board of Directors of the West Newbury Youth Baseball League since 2014.
