Jeff Kaplan is an American video game designer. Kaplan previously served as the vice president of Blizzard Entertainment. He designed elements of World of Warcraft and was the lead designer on Overwatch. He joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2002. Kaplan was born on November 4, 1972, in New Jersey United States. He was raised in La Cañada Flintridge, California.
Kaplan had always been an avid video game player. During his school years, he was influenced by the various Infocom adventure games. However, lacking programming skills, Kaplan never thought he would be able to get a career in the video game industry. He attended the University of Southern California. He also attended the New York University where he earned his creative writing degree. Upon his graduation, Kaplan worked for his father’s recruiting business while performing creative writing to try to get his stories published.
Kaplan joined Blizzard in May 2002. His initial role at Blizzard was assisting with quality assurance for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in the weeks prior to its release. In 2017, he was honored with the Vanguard Award at the Fun & Serious Game Festival, which takes place in the Spanish city of Bilbao. On April 20, 2021, Blizzard announced that Kaplan was leaving the company after nineteen years.
