Prof Justice James Otieno Odek was a Judge of the Court of Appeal, Kisumu. He served as the Director of the Judiciary Training Institute from 2016 to 2018, having become a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2012.

Otieno Odek was born on 18 October 1963, in Eldoret Uasin Gishu county. He was found dead on December 16, 2019. He was 56 years old.

James Otieno Odek attended Kapsoya Primary School in Eldoret from 1969-1971. From 1971-1975 he attended Race Course Primary School in Eldoret where he attained a Certificate Of Primary Education. From 1976-1979 he attended ST. Mary’S High School, (Attained Kenya Junior Secondary Examination Certificate, KSJE, 1977). In 1980 he went to Sisibo Secondary School in Eldoret where he attained a Kenya Certificate Of Education, (Ordinary Level). From 1984-1987, he attended the University of Nairobi and graduated with a Bachelor Of Laws, First Class Honours (LLB, 1st Class Hons.) From 1987-1988, he went to Kenyan School of Law in Nairobi and attained a Diploma in Law. From 1988-1989, he attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, where he graduated with a Master Of Laws Degree (LLM). From 1991- JAN 1995, he attended the University of Toronto in Canada where he obtained a Doctor Of Juridical Science (JSD) Degree.

James Otieno Odek Death

Prof Justice James Otieno Odek was found dead in his house on December 16, 2019, according to Nyanza Regional Police Commander Dr. Vincent Makokha. He stayed alone at the Groove Hut apartment next to Kisumu Central Police Station. The judge’s body was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital Mortuary.

Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court Of Kenya, Hon. Justice David K. Maraga, EGH, announced James Otieno Odek’s death in a statement on the Judiciary website on December 16, 2019. The statement read:

“I am deeply saddened to announce the sudden demise of Justice (Prof) Otieno-Odek, Judge of the Court of Appeal, Kisumu. He was found dead in his house this morning and the cause is yet to be established.

“Judge Odek served as the Director of the Judiciary Training Institute from 2016 to 2018, having become a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2012.

“He was not only a distinguished Judge but also a prolific legal scholar who was widely published and celebrated across the continent and beyond.

“On behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire legal fraternity for this shocking loss.”
