Jack Hatton was an America’s judo star. He competed at the Montreal Grand Prix in July 2019 where he finished in fifth place. In August 2019, Hatton placed in third at the PanAmerican Championships Seniors in Lima, Peru. Hatton competed in the World Judo Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in August 2019, according to his International Judo Federation profile.

Hatton won two Pan American Opens, in El Salvador in 2016, and in Chile in 2017. Also in 2017, Hatton won a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb, Croatia. At the same tournament in 2019, which was held in Turkey, Hatton won a commendation for best international performance.

Jack Hatton died on September 24, 2019 at the age of 24. Pedro’s Judo Center announced his death in a Facebook post: “It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the untimely passing of one of our students, teammates, brothers, and friends, Jack Hatton. Jack has been a member of Pedro’s Judo Center since 2015 and pursuing his dream of becoming a member of the 2020 Olympic Team. Along with being a top US Judo athlete, Jack was kind-hearted, caring and an all-around great person. He was a true role model for students at our dojo and judoka all over the country. He will be deeply missed by all of us at Pedro’s Judo Center and the rest of the judo world.

USA Judo also announced his death in a statement on its website. The USA Judo statement read, “It is with extremely heavy hearts that USA Judo announces the unexpected passing of USA Judo national team member, Jack Hatton. We extend our sincere condolences to the Hatton Family, and Jack’s teammates, coaches and friends. Jack was one of America’s top judo players and was a multi-time medalist for USA Judo in various competitions across the globe. Jack made an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and he will not be forgotten. We grieve with the entire USA Judo and international judo community during this tough time. USA Judo is in the process of providing grief counseling services for those in need and will share information on services for Jack as they become available.”

World Champion Sagi Muki paid tribute to Hatton in a statement: “I am so sad to hear. Jack is oe of the best USA Judoka and top athlete at the U81kg division. I’m so sad top hear this and I hope he is in na better place. I had a tough fight with him. My heart is broken.”

Former World Champion and USA coach Jimmy Pedro shared his condolences: “It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the untimely passing of one of our students, teammates, brothers, and friends, Jack Hatton. World Bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier: “Jack came often to Canada to train with us. He was amazing guy that everyone loved. I heard about the news and I am very shocked and extremely sad. I still have a hard time believing it. I considered him to be a great friend. He will be missed by everyone. My sincere condolences to his friends and family.”
