Born in Hickory, North Carolina, Poston attended Hickory High School in Hickory, where he was a three-time All-Catawba Valley Conference (CVAC) selection and a two-time North Carolina High School 3-A State Individual Champion. Poston set several North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) records in winning the state 3-A golf championship as his one-round score of 63 was the lowest ever shot for 18 holes in the state championship, and his 36-hole score of 13-under, 131, was also a new state tournament record.
He went on to join the Western Carolina University where he played collegiate golf, While at Western Carolina University he was a member of the Men’s Golf team. Poston won six times including two consecutive Southern Conference titles, he studied Finance and graduated in May 2015.
