J.J. Spaun is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. He earned his first PGA TOUR title at the 2022 Valero Texas Open, defeating Matt Jones and Matt Kuchar by two strokes to win in his 147th career start at the age of 31.
Spaun played his college golf at the San Diego State University, where he was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection in 2010, 2011 and Conference Player of the Year in 2012. He was named a Third-team All-American in 2011 and Second-team All-American in 2012 highlighted by three-straight individual wins his senior year. He majored in social science at SDSU and turned professional in 2012.
In Juy 2015, Spaun secured his first victory at the Staal Foundation Open and moved into the Order of Merit lead. He concluded the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada season with $91,193 in earnings to earn Player of the Year honors and earn exempt status on the Korn Ferry Tour for 2016. J.J. Spaun was diagnosed with diabetes in 2018 after an unexplained weight loss sent him to the doctor. At the time, he was diagnosed as Type 2, but he would find out after further tests in February 2021 that he had late onset Type 1 diabetes.
He won the 2020 Travelers Championship’s Umbrella at 15 1/2 River Highlands. The golfer gave the $10,000 prize to the JDRF, which is dedicated to finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
On the golf course, Spaun wears a Libre blood sugar monitor that he checks with his smartphone every 30 minutes or so. If the number is too high, he can have blurry vision and fatigue; when it gets low, he’ll feel lightheaded and shaky and reaches for something with sugar or carbs to eat.
Spaun is back up to a healthy weight of 175 pounds after losing more than 50 pounds during the first three years he lived with diabetes.
