Imy was born deaf and growing up relied on hearing aids and lip reading for communication. Less than a year ago she had a cochlear implant and, as well as now being able to hear better than before, she can enjoy music clearly for the first time.
When she left school she travelled solo to Australia, Thailand and Bali, which was challenging due to her disability and the language barriers. After returning home, she took a pottery class and became hooked. She loves to take her hearing aids out and get lost in the clay. She is a part time model and wants to promote deaf awareness so other young people don’t feel alone.

The Great Pottery Throw Down’s Imy Kiara Harris is deaf. She was born deaf and relied on hearing aids and lip reading for communication when growing up. In December 2023, Imy had a cochlear implant. She wrote about the life-changing operation in an Instagram post.
She wrote: “Getting a cochlear implant was a monumental decision for me. Growing up, I often felt frustrated by being deaf and different. I used to hide my hearing aids beneath my hair out of embarrassment. So, the thought of having a hearing device that’s even more noticeable than my hearing aids was daunting.
“However, I realized it was time to embrace who I am and not let my disability define me. Little did I know, this decision would profoundly enhance my ability to hear things I never could before.
“Looking back, I am forever grateful for taking the plunge and going ahead with the operation. #deafcommunity #cochlearimplant #advancebionics.”
Imy Kiara Harris Great Pottery Throw Down
Deaf potter Imy Kiara Harris is a contestant in Season 8 of The Great Pottery Throw Down, presented by Siobhan McSweeney. The show follows 12 budding potters as they compete in the challenges set by judges Richard Miller and Keith Brymer Jones. They will be joined this series by new Kiln Technician Princess Fingall, who was a contestant in series 7 of the show.
