Henry Lu Biography – Henry Lu Wiki
Henry Lu is an Asian-American chef and co-founder of JŪN and byKIN. He is a contestant on Season 22 of Top Chef. The Bronx native’s first foray into his future career in the kitchen was working at his parents’ Chinese restaurants.
After earning a degree in art history from the University of Buffalo, Henry enrolled in the French Culinary Institute, where he honed his skills, preparing him to work in some of the most renowned kitchens in Manhattan, including his stints as a sous chef at Pearl and Ash, where the restaurant earned two stars from The New York Times and was featured as one of Bon Appetit’s 2013 Top 10 Best New Restaurants and Williamsburg’s Llama Inn which also received two stars from The New York Times.
He then spent three years as the executive chef at the Four Happy Men Hospitality Group, where he was featured in Eater New York’s 2018 Best Dishes and Food & Wine’s 2019 list of Things You Won’t Want to Miss.
In 2020, Henry moved to Houston, where he partnered with “Top Chef” alum Evelyn Garcia to open their first restaurant, JŪN, located in the Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas. JŪN celebrates family and differences, combining Garcias’ Mexican and Salvadoran heritage with Henry Lu’s Chinese roots to create funky, yet delicious, flavors and dishes. Since opening, JŪN has been a 2024 James Beard Award semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant and named 2023 Best New Restaurant by Infatuation and the Robb Report.
Henry and business partner Evelyn work together on byKIN, a Southeast Asian-inspired catering, pop-up, and product line company and most recently they have been named 2025 James Beard Semi-finalists for Best Chef: Texas.

Chef Henry Lu, a Bronx native, is a contestant on the 22nd season of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef,” judged by Kristen Kish, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. The prestigious culinary series returns this spring with a set of 15 new cheftestants who are taking Canada by storm. From Toronto to Calgary, Montreal, and Prince Edward Island, Season 22 will highlight much of the rich cooking scene in Canada, and it will feature many familiar faces.
For Season 22, the competitors have the chance to win $250,000 provided by Saratoga Spring Water and a $125,000 flight credit to spend on travel with Delta Air Lines. Plus, the winner will get a feature in Food & Wine Magazine and make an appearance at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.
The first-place finisher will also headline a dinner at the James Beard house in New York City and have the chance to present at The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago, Illinois. Also, cash prizes totaling $150,000 will be offered during each Quickfire Challenge, and at several Elimination Challenges.

Bronx native Henry Lu is a proud member of the LGBTQ community. In an interview with OutSmart Magazine, Henry revealed he was president of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance (LGBTA) in college. He is a donor and supporter for Trevor Project which is focused on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
