Hamza Yassin Biography – Hamza Yassin Wiki

Hamza Yassin is a Sudanese-born Scottish wildlife cameraman and presenter. He is one of the presenters of BBC’s Animal Park and a guest presenter on BBC’s Countryfile where he shares his vast knowledge and camera skills. He is well known to younger viewers under the guise of Ranger Hamza, presenting CBeebies live-action show Let’s Go For A Walk and new series Ranger Hamza’s Eco Quest later this month.

Hamza moved to the Scottish Highlands when he was younger to follow his dream of filming Scottish wildlife and becoming a wildlife cameraman. He has lived there ever since and recently fronted Channel 4 documentary Scotland: My Life in the Wild and Scotland: Escape to the Wilderness, in which he guided celebrity companions on journeys through western and eastern Scotland and the Highlands.

Born in Sudan, Hamza Yassin’s parents brought the family to the UK from Sudan when he was eight. He always loved animals and despite being severely dyslexic, earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Zoology with Conservation from Bagnor University.

“I wanted to be the next Sir David Attenborough. Or Steve Irwin. And if I couldn’t be those two guys, what’s the next best thing? The person filming them. I’d still be there with the animals, telling conservation stories to the world.”

Most wildlife filmmakers start off as researchers in Bristol, where the BBC’s natural history unit is based. Yassin didn’t think anyone would want a dyslexic researcher. He had a degree but his showreel wasn’t good enough for this competitive profession. At the age of 21, he drove his cameras up to Ardnamurchan to kick off his career his own way.

Hamza lives on the beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula, where he’s the only black person. “I’m the only black person on the whole peninsula and most of the west coast. Even people in neighbouring islandislands know who I am. I’ll go over to Mull or Muck and people will say, ‘Hey Hamza, how you doing?'”

In July 2022, Yassin earned a Masters Degree (MSc.) in Biological Imaging and Photography from Bagnor University. He took to social media to celebrate his Masters Honours Degree. He wrote: “Never in a million years did I think I would be accepting this Masters Honours Degree from @bangor_university. Following in the footsteps of countless amazing people including one of the people I look up to the most: Sir David Attenborough Who also received this award.

“Let me start off by saying how grateful I am, and I want to thank everyone at Bangor University, especially my lecturers, my professors, my colleagues, and finally my parents.

“I will always treasure my time here in this University, where I learned so much from all my lectures, practicals, and all the wonderful trips that we did. I couldn’t wait to see what each module brought and what new information I was going to learn about the natural world.”
