Geri Allen born Geri Antoinette Allen was an American jazz pianist, composer, and recording artist. She was also the wife of the late jazz trumpeter Wallace Roney who died on March 31, 2020, as a result of Covid 19 complications. Apart from being a performer and a bandleader, she was an associate professor of music and the director of the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh.
The lady pianist went to school in Detroit Public Schools. At the age of 7, she began playing the piano and then she settled on becoming a jazz pianist in her early teenage years. She graduated from Howard University’s jazz studies program in 1979. She then went ahead to continue her studies with pianist Kenny Barron in New York at the University of Pittsburgh, where she completed a master’s degree in ethnomusicology in the year 1982. She then returned to New York after completion of her studies.
She became involved in the M-Base collective in New York. Her first recording as a leader was in 1984, which resulted in The Printmakers. This trio album, with bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Andrew Cyrille, also featured some of her compositions. She got an award for the Jazzpar Prize in 1996 and even recorded two albums with Ornette Coleman that is: Sound Museum: Hidden Man and Sound Museum: Three Women.
According to Wikipedia, in 2006, she composed “For the Healing of the Nations”, a suite is written in tribute to the victims and survivors of the September 11 attacks. In 2008, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship . As a longtime resident of Montclair, New Jersey she got the opportunity to become the director of the jazz studies program at the University of Pittsburgh in 2013.
In her lifetime, she managed to scoop several awards including Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee, 2014, Guggenheim Fellowship, 2008, African American Classical Music Award from Spelman College, 2007 and The Benny Golson Jazz Master Award, 2005 among others. She portrayed jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams and performed together with the jazz band in the Robert Altman film Kansas City.
