George Murphy was a Canadian politician. He was best known for giving oil and gas updates to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and as general manager of Jiffy Cabs. He served in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015. He also ran as a member of the Liberal Party in the 2019 and 2021 provincial elections, aiming to represent the members of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi and Harbour Main, respectively.

Murphy died suddenly on June 5, 2021 at the age of 58 after suffering a heart attack while enjoying a night around the fire pit with friends and family at his home in Seal Cove. His wife Joy shared the shocking news on Facebook.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must say good bye to my friend, father to our beautiful boys, grandfather and husband of 12 years next month. George Murphy passed suddenly away this evening at our home enjoying a fire in our pit and some of nature’s wonders right in front of us. I write this because this is what he would have wanted. He lived for each week to keep everyone informed of what was happening with gas and oil or anything else he felt they would need to know about.Newfoundland and Labrador has lost yet another brilliant mind and a man who truly loved everyone.Good bye my love❤ Gone but you will never be forgotten….”
Former NDP MHA Gerry Rogers entered the provincial legislature at the same time as Murphy in 2011, tweeted: “A man of great integrity and compassion, it was an honour to work with @GeorgeMurphyOil while he was an MHA. His commitment to work on behalf of people of NL was so strong. He took his duty seriously w both pride and humility. Joy and boys and Walter we carry you in our hearts.”
