George Englund was an American film editor, director, producer, and actor. Born George Howe Ripley was known for his work on The Ugly American (1963), Dark of the Sun (1968), and The Eddie Fisher Show (1957). Englund was best friends with Marlon Brando, who starred in Englund’s 1963 film The Ugly American, and wrote a memoir about their friendship, “The Way It’s Never Been Done Before: My Friendship with Marlon Brando” and Cloris My Autobiography.
Englund earned his early education at Black-Foxe Military Institute. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles where he major in English/Philosophy. Englund was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and captained the basketball and tennis teams. Before he passed on he was in the process of completing his autobiography and a movie about his life and friendship with actor Marlon Brando. George spent the last decade of his life with his close friend Frances Bowes, writing, traveling, and enjoying life.
