Gene Deitch born Eugene Merril Deitch was an American-Czech illustrator, animator, comics artist, and film director. He was based in Prague since 1959 and was known for creating animated cartoons such as Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik, as well as his work on the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.
In 1929 while he was young, his family moved to California, and he attended school in Hollywood. He graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1942. After graduating, Deitch began working for North American Aviation, drawing aircraft blueprints before being drafted for the military and entering pilot training. He then fell ill and after being discharged for medical reasons, the illustrator then based himself in Prague from 1959 and his career took off.
His movie Munro won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960. He was also nominated for the same award twice in 1964 for Here’s Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship. Earlier, he had created the Tom Terrific series, while Sidney’s Family Tree, which he co-produced was nominated for an Academy Award in 1958. He is survived by his wife and three sons from his first marriage, all of whom are cartoonists.

Before his divorce in 1960, he was previously married to Marie Deitch in 1943 who was his first wife. They both worked at North American Aviation. They had three sons together.

Gene Deitch Death
Gene Deitch died in Prague on April 16, 2020, at the age of 95. Shortly before his death, he had noted intestinal problems. The illustrator passed away on Thursday night at his apartment in Prague. His Czech publisher, Petr Himmel, told The Associated Press that he died ‘unexpectedly.’ Fans have taken to Twitter to share condolences and express how much his work meant to them.

Gene Deitch Cause of Death
Gene Deitch’s cause of death was not revealed. Cartoon Brew said: “According to a family friend and neighbor, the cause of death was not related to coronavirus. While Deitch hadn’t been sick, he had complained about intestinal problems in the days before his passing.”
