Gabriele Grunewald born Gabriele Anderson, was an American professional middle-distance runner.
Grunewald competed for the University of Minnesota where she was national runner-up in the 1500 meters at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
After graduating from college in 2010, she decided to become a professional athlete, competing as a middle-distance runner. In 2012 she ran in the Olympic trials, failing to qualify by one spot, finishing fourth.
In 2013, her time of 4 minutes 1.48 seconds made her the 11th-fastest 1,500-meter runner in American history. And in 2014, she won the United States’ indoor national championship in the 3,000 meters.
In 2016 she raced for a place in the 1,500 meters in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She made it to the finals of the United States trials.

Grunewald was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), a rare cancer of the salivary gland in April 2009, while still an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota. Later that year, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Due to tumors, her salivary gland was removed in 2009 and her thyroid was removed two years later. She had surgery to remove a roughly five-by-six-inch cancerous tumor from her liver on August 26, 2016; a surgical oncologist performed a right hepatectomy to remove the tumor as well as the affected right lobe of her liver.

Grunewald died on June 11, 2019, at her home in Minneapolis after a 10-year battle with cancer. She was 32 years old. Gabriele Grunewald’s husband, Justin Grunewald, confirmed her death in an Instagram post.
