Flora Duffy Biography – Flora Duffy Wiki

Flora Duffy is a Bermudian triathlete. On July 27, 2021, Duffy made Olympic history winning the women’s triathlon in Tokyo to give the tiny island of Bermuda their first-ever gold medal at a Summer Games. Bermuda’s only previous Olympic medallist was boxer Clarence Hill in 1976.

Born and raised in Bermuda, Duffy started competing in triathlon at the age of seven and has since been twice crowned ITU World Champion, represented Bermuda at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games and won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

After winning world titles in 2016 and 2017, Flora’s season was cut short in 2018 with a foot injury suffered during WTS Yokohama – a race she went on to win. That followed victory in the first-ever WTS Bermuda – in which she led right from the swim all the way to the finish line to the delight of her legions of fans on the island – but halted her title defence as she was forced to withdraw from the season after WTS Hamburg.

On 17 November 2018, Flora Duffy received the Order of the British Empire by Prince Charles. The OBE was awarded for her services to triathlon in Bermuda and the world.

Is Flora Duffy married? Duffy married fellow triathlete Dan Hugo in December 2017. Hugo and Duffy met in Boulder in 2010. They started hanging out and ran in the same training groups and by 2013, they were dating. The couple tied the knot at Hugo’s family’s farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa.

“We got married on Dan’s family farm in Worcester, South Africa, a small town about an hour outside of Cape Town,” Duffy told Triathlete.com. “It was beautiful; everything I wanted. We had some people come from Bermuda, Boulder, and obviously our families were there. It was just wonderful.”

The wedding capped a memorable 2017 for Duffy, who won the ITU World Triathlon Series for a second successive year and the Xterra World Championship for a fourth time in a row. Hugo, who participated in the first XTERRA event in 2004, is a native of Stellenbosch, South Africa. During his career, he finished in the top 5 over 70 times, including 15 major championship wins and 22 runner-up finishes.

Flora Duffy’s parents are Charlie and Maria Duffy. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, her proud parents watched her cross the finishing line to become Bermuda’s second Commonwealth Games gold medal-winner and first female with the distinction.

The proud parents wore “Go Flora Go!” shirts in the grandstand in Australia. Shortly after Flora made history, they spoke to The Royal Gazette.

Maria Duffy said: “The glory is all hers.” Maria added that her daughter’s hard work and dedication had paid off. She said: “She’s earned all the respect. She’s done the hard work. You always hope it pays off on days like today. It all played out perfectly for her.”

Charlie Duffy said there were a few nervous moments as his daughter made a late arrival to the start line at Southport Broadwater Parklands in Australia’s Gold Coast.

He said: “When she didn’t show up at the beginning I was terrified. I thought, ‘Has the pressure got to her?’ She was just staying out of the sun; that’s what she does.” He added: “The amazing thing is how far she beats these people. These are some of the best in the world and she just annihilates them. She was so built up, especially at home, and there was a lot of pressure on her.”
