Elliot Peters Biography – Elliot Peters Wiki
Elliot R. Peters is an attorney and partner at Keker, Van Nest & Peters, “a San Francisco litigation firm that takes make or break cases where companies, careers and reputations are riding on the result.” Peters’ practice areas include Antitrust, Appellate, Consumer & Class Actions, Contract & Commercial, Professional Liability, Securities, and White Collar Criminal, according to his bio on Keker, Van Nest & Peters website.
A Manhattan native, Peters first became interested in law as a member of his high school’s debate team. He earned an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Yale University and then worked on a US Senate campaign before starting at NYU Law. When he became involved in the law school’s Criminal Law Clinic, which later evolved into the Federal Defender Clinic, its co-founder Chet Mirsky urged Peters to take a summer internship in the Brooklyn office of Federal Defenders of New York.
He began participating in moot court, and received awards for Best Brief, Best Oralist, and Moot Court Champion by a panel of judges that included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, then a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
After law school, Peters clerked for Judge Whitman Knapp in the Southern District of New York, and later served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the same district. In 1991, he moved to California and joined the firm that was then Keker & Van Nest. He became a partner in 2004, then name partner in 2017.
Peters frequently works on cases of national significance, for instance, leading the defenses of internet activist Aaron Swartz and cyclist Lance Armstrong. Representing the Major League Baseball Players Association, he successfully challenged DOJ seizures of baseball players’ drug testing records in the seminal computer search case, United States v. Comprehensive Drug Testing.
Peters also defended financier Frank Quattrone, securities litigator William Lerach and CEO Bruce Karatz. He has shielded top global law firms from the spotlight while defending complex malpractice claims, and has represented technology companies in protecting their cutting-edge intellectual property.
Peters is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and has been named the Attorney of the Year by California Lawyer and The Recorder, The American Lawyer’s Litigator of the Week, and The Daily Journal’s Top 100 Attorneys in California.
