Dr. Richard Shaw Johnny Depp v Amber Heard Defamation Trial

On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, Dr. Richard J. Shaw, a forensic psychiatrist originally from the United Kingdom, was asked about his opinion of Dr. David R. Spiegel’s testimony from the day before [May 23, 2022]. Dr. Spiegel had testified that Johnny Depp “has behaviors that are consistent with someone that both has substance-use disorder as well as behaviors of someone who is a perpetrator of intimate partner violence.”

Dr. Shaw said Dr. Spiegel violated the ethical principles in regards to the Goldwater Rule when talking about Depp as a public figure without having interviewed or examined him. The rule prohibits giving a professional opinion in this way. He added Dr. Spiegel’s opinions are unreliable.

Dr. Shaw continued his criticism of the psychiatrist giving his opinions and claiming “a degree of medical certainty” and not saying what additional information he wanted in giving his assessment.

Dr. Shaw said the presence of risk factors for intimate partner violence does not necessarily indicate that it occurred as Dr. Spiegel said.
