Dr. John Scala Wiki – Dr. John Scala Biography

Dr. John Scala is an American journalist currently working as a Meteorologist for WGAL News 8 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania since July 2005. He came to WGAL from the Millersville University of Pennsylvania where he held a tenure-track appointment and served as the Associate Director of Millersville’s Center for Disaster Research and Education. Prior to his role in academia, Dr. Scala was the Meteorology Training Coordinator at The Weather Channel and their first on-camera Storm Analyst. He provided live coverage of the historic Great Plains tornado outbreak of May 3, 1999, the August 11, 1999, Salt Lake City F2, and the Fort Worth F3 tornado of March 28, 2000.

He started his professional career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where he focused on the observation and numerical modeling of storms. His career includes participation in several research programs and the sampling of storms from five different research aircraft. He has flown over the Amazon Rain Forest during the heart of the rainy season and over Lake Michigan in the middle of winter. He is a former President of the National Weather Association (NWA). He serves on the NWA’s Committee on Societal Impacts of Weather and Climate, the Strategic Planning Committee, and as Treasurer after two successive terms as a Councilor. Dr. Scala received the National Weather Association’s Member of the Year Award in 2009.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he is also a certified consulting meteorologist of the American Meteorological Society where he serves on the Board of Continuing Professional Development, the American Geophysical Union, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. He earned the nationally recognized Certified Consulting Meteorologist designation by the American Meteorological Society in 2011. He is often asked to address insurance underwriters, claims adjusters and special investigators, first responders, and emergency managers, as well as public schools and community service organizations on storm damage, severe weather awareness, and disaster preparedness. In addition to his on-air duties at WGAL, he is a forensic meteorologist preparing expert opinions on criminal civil litigation including cases of personal injury, questionable death, and storm-related damage.

He is an alumnus of the Univerisity of Virginia where he has a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (1980-1990). He also has a bachelor’s degree – Bachelor of Science Biology-Geology from the University of Rochester from 1976 to 1980.
