Dr. David Spiegel is a psychiatrist who practices in Norfolk, Virginia. He is affiliated with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Dr. David Spiegel is a Professor and Vice Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). He joined EVMS in 2001 after almost a decade in private practice.

Dr. Spiegel is clinical supervisor for psychiatry residents and psychology interns. His learners regularly accompany him on rounds at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he helps patients suffering from delirium and acute mania or psychosis. In his offices at EVMS, he mainly treats mood and anxiety disorders.

In December 2021, David Spiegel was named Editor in Chief of Clinical Neuropharmacology journal, one of the first journals devoted to the topic. He is the first psychiatrist to serve in this capacity.

He obtained his medical degree in 1989 from State University of New York-Downstate College of Medicine at Brooklyn, where he first gained an interest in cognitive therapy for anxiety disorders.

Dr. Spiegel then completed his psychiatry residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire from June 1, 1989 – June 1, 1990 and Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania from June 30, 1991 – June 30, 1993.

Psychiatrist Dr. David Spiegel testified against Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp in the Depp v. Heard defamation trial on Monday, May 23rd, 2022. As one of Heard’s witnesses, the psychiatrist testified that Johnny Depp “has behaviors that are consistent with someone that both has substance-use disorder as well as behaviors of someone who is a perpetrator of intimate-partner violence,” per the Law & Crime Network.

Depp’s legal team questioned Spiegel’s ability to make such determinations without having spoken with him. Spiegel said he asked to speak with Depp twice and was denied.
