Damon Weaver (born Damon Lazar Weaver) was the kid reporter who interviewed President Barack Obama at the White House in 2009 as an 11-year-old. He had 10 minutes with the president in the Diplomatic Room and centered many of his questions around education: school lunches, bullying, conflict resolution, and how to succeed. He finished by inviting Obama to visit his school and asked him to be his “homeboy,” noting that Vice President Joe Biden already had taken him up on the offer.

Weaver got his start in fifth grade when he volunteered for the school newscast at K.E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary in a farm community on the shores of Lake Okeechobee.

“Damon was the kid who ran after me in the hall to tell me he was interested,” his teacher, Brian Zimmerman, told the Post in 2016. “And right away, I just saw the potential for the way he was on camera. You could see his personality come through. He wasn’t nervous being on camera.”

In addition to interviewing a president, Weaver’s resume also included interviews with President Joe Biden, then a U.S. senator and a candidate for vice president; Miami Heat basketball star Dwyane Wade; and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Weaver’s early foray into journalism began in fifth grade when he volunteered for the school newscast. He went on to graduate from Royal Palm Beach High School where he earned a scholarship to Albany State University in Georgia. Most recently, Weaver had been living in West Palm Beach and planned to return to Albany State in the fall to continue working toward a degree in communications. His goal was to cover the National Football League (NFL) as a sports journalist.
