Clay Higgins is an American politician and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Louisiana’s 3rd District. He is an Army Veteran and law enforcement officer, maintaining an active commission and Louisiana State POST Certification.
A lifelong resident of Louisiana, Higgins graduated from Covington High School in Covington, Louisiana, and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After LSU, he served as a military police officer in the United States Army and the Louisiana Army National Guard.
Higgins had many successful years in business but returned to uniform service as a street cop in 2004. He served Acadiana in Law Enforcement as a deputy sheriff for St. Landry Parish.
Prior to joining Congress in 2017, Higgins was served as Deputy Marshal for the City of Lafayette. He was elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fifteenth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2017-present).
Congressman Higgins is widely regarded as one of the most conservative members of Congress and is a core member of the House Freedom Caucus. He serves as a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and as Chairman of the Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee, where he investigates corruption at the highest levels of government. Congressman Higgins is also a member of the House Armed Services Committee, serving on the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces and the Subcommittee on Readiness.
Congressman Higgins is honored to serve the people of South Louisiana. He was one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 2024 to conduct the impeachment proceedings of Alejandro N. Mayorkas, United States Secretary of Homeland Security.

She’s receiving excellent care and further evaluation at a Louisiana hospital ICU. I am here with her every minute. Please keep Becca and my family in your prayers.”
He later provided an update, writing, “Becca has been released from ICU. Recovery has begun. Neurological medical issues are very complex, impossible to explain in a paragraph, just please know that we are forever grateful for the loving prayers we’ve felt from all of you,” Higgins said. “I am humbled by the healing grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His will be done.”
