Chidimma Adetshina, full name Chidinma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, is a model, netball player and Miss South Africa 2024 contestant. The Soweto native is a student at Varsity College studying Bachelor of Law.
She is passionate about sports and advocating for change on violence against woman and children and gender-based violence, according to her Miss SA biography. She describes herself as ambitious, confident and optimistic. Her motto is “dreams are valid when actions are taken.”

Miss SA contestant Chidima Adetshina was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent. “My dad is a proud Nigerian and my mother was born and raised in South Africa but has roots from Mozambique. My mom’s family still live in Soweto and I visit them from time to time,” she told Sowetan SMag.

Chidimma Adetshina is a finalist in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant. The model has been at the centre of a controversy surrounding her eligibility to compete for the Miss SA title due to her bloodline and Nigerian name. In her entry video to the competition, Chidimma introduced herself as a 23-year-old from Cape Town.
Some South Africans on social media challenged her eligibility to represent South Africa on such a prominent stage. Chidimma defended her heritage, saying she meets the requirements to compete for the Miss SA title.
“I am a South African citizen, and I have met all the requirements to be a part of the Miss SA competition. The fact that my father is Nigerian does not take away from the fact that I am South African. My mother is South African, and I was born and raised in this country,” she said.
The Miss South Africa organization have also weighed in, confirming that Adetshina met all the requirements to participate in the pageant.
“All documentation provided by the entrants is screened and vetted. Chidinma is a South African citizen and has met all the requirements to be a part of the Miss South Africa competition. Her mother is South African (Zulu), and her father is Nigerian,” the organisation told IOL.

The organisation, which is known for its stringent criteria regarding citizenship and ethical conduct, emphasised on its website the competition requires all entrants to hold South African citizenship and uphold exemplary standards of behaviour.
“Miss South Africa entrants must be South African citizens and in possession of a valid South African ID document or passport. If an applicant holds dual citizenship, they must provide details of both on the entry form.
“By entering to compete for the title of Miss South Africa 2024, you will be required to consent to, and authorise the Miss South Africa organisation, doing a psychological wellbeing assessment including resilience testing, background checks to verify information provided in your entry form and confirmation you are an upstanding citizen worthy of representing the country.”
Chidinma is not the first contestant to have a parent who is not South African. Former Miss SA, Vanessa Carreira Coutroulis, who was also the second runner-up at the Miss Universe competition, has Portuguese-Angolan parents, East Coast Radio reported.
