Thom Bateman is the chef and owner of The Flintlock, a fine dining restaurant alongside the Caldon Canal in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. He competed on the BBC’s Great British Menu in 2023 and 2025.

Thom started his culinary career very early, becoming head chef at a Latin American restaurant at just 18, a role he held for six years. He left the hospitality industry in 2009 at 23 after struggling with his mental health. He went to work for his family agricultural engineering business for 10 years. In this period he was able to travel all over the UK and throughout Europe. He moved to Yorkshire to live with his partner but he and his family have now returned to the Moorlands.

In 2019 Thom started a food blog page first on Facebook then shortly after on Instagram known as “bbox food” reigniting a passion for cooking, working with many internationally recognised brands and amassing a large and loyal following. His food caught so much attention that he was awarded TSC 2021 Social Media Influencer of the Year.

In 2020, he finally opened his own restaurant, The Flintlock at Cheddleton. The fine dining menu focuses on seasonal and local ingredients to create delicious, beautifully presented dishes. Since its opening, the restaurant has been awarded 3 AA rosettes and in 2023 was included into the Michelin Guide.

In 2024 he opened his second restaurant Après, which focuses on tasting menus in a small intimate setting. He also launched “Collision Course” with fellow Great British Menu alumnus and business partner Sabrina Gidda.

Thom Bateman is a contestant on the Great British Menu 2025. He will representing the Central and Eastern Region on the hit BBC series alongside David Taylor, Chef at Grace and Savour; Harry Kirkpatrick, Head Chef at Trinity; and Sally Abé, Executive chef at The Pem.

Proudly representing Stoke-on-Trent and the Staffordshire Moorlands, Thom is ready once again to show his modern British cooking. For the competition, he has crafted a menu inspired by iconic figures such as J.R.R. Tolkien and William Shakespeare, using his creative flair while staying true to his bold, refined style of cooking.

Great British Menu 2023

Chef Thom Bateman appeared on the BBC’s Great British Menu 2023. He represented the Central region alongside Marianne Lumb, private chef for exclusive clients, Tom Shepherd, chef patron of Upstairs in Lichfield, and Kareem Roberts, head chef at Trinity in Cambridge.

The theme for the Great British Menu 2023 was inspired by Paddington’s 65th birthday and a celebration of British animation and illustration – from cartoons to comics to computer games. His menu celebrated his Stafford pride taking inspiration from Midland’s comic artist Dave Follows’ strip, ‘May un mar Lady.’

“I’m very excited to announce that I will representing the Central region in this year’s @greatbritishmenu,” Thom wrote on Instagram. “Obviously it’s a huge honour for me and very humbling to be competing in this year’s competition!”
