Kari Cota is the executive pastry chef at Pendry San Diego. She is a former executive pastry chef at Kimpton Alma San Diego and La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. The San Diego native is a contestant on Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship 2025.
Kari was inspired to bake at a young age, having spent much of her childhood admiring beautifully decorated, made-from-scratch cakes in her grandmother’s kitchen.
Her passion for pastry and baking was ignited once again after spending three years working for the County of San Diego Sheriff’s Department, when she decided to make a career change and earned Baking and Pastry Arts Certificates from both The California Culinary Academy and The National Culinary and Baking School.
From there, Kari’s career as an Executive Pastry Chef began to take shape, and she quickly rose up in the ranks at several local bakeries and pastry kitchens, earning the title of Pastry Cook in 2007. She has worked alongside several local celebrities in the culinary scene, to include Chef Jeff Jackson and Chef John Harmeier at The Lodge at Torrey Pines; Chef Marcelo Alvarez at M&M Patisserie; and Chef Nick Green at L’Auberge Del Mar.
Kari was first named Executive Pastry Chef in 2022 at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla and has continued to hone her craft, collaborating with colleagues to create unique and unforgettable confectionary works of art.

Executive Pastry Chef Kari Cota, a San Diego native, is one of 13 bakers competing in season 11 of Food Network’s “Spring Baking Championship.” The bakers will be battling for a $25,000 grand prize and the title of Spring Baking Champion.
She revealed the news on social media, writing: “The come back is always greater then the setback. I have been working so hard one day at a time to get to this point in my career. I have had many sacrifices and struggles along the way. But here we are.
“I am very nervous and excited to let all of you know that you can watch me on the Food Network Spring Baking Championship premiering March 10th at 5pm pacific standard time .I sure have come a long way and I’m not going to stop anytime soon.”
