Chad Grunander is an American attorney and a prosecutor with the Utah County Attorney’s Office. Grunander is a veteran prosecutor with over 22 years of experience in criminal law. He currently serves as Chief Deputy to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray, where he oversees the Major Crimes and General Crimes Divisions.

His supervisory responsibilities include the Special Victims Unit, Violent Crimes Section, General Crimes Section, and Juvenile/Justice Section. Throughout his tenure with the Utah County Attorney’s Office, Grunander has also served as Criminal Division Chief, Community Services Chief, and Supervising Attorney.

In recognition of his outstanding work, Grunander was named Utah Prosecutor of the Year in 2024. He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) in 2023—an invitation-only fellowship limited to the top 1% of trial lawyers in each state or province. The ACTL is widely regarded as the premier professional organization for trial attorneys in the United States and Canada, honoring those who exemplify the highest standards of trial advocacy, ethics, and professionalism.

Grunander has led the prosecution of several high-profile and precedent-setting cases, including State v. Martin MacNeill (2013), State v. Tyerell Przybycien (2017), State v. Michael Kufrin (2021), State v. Matt Hoover (2024) and State of Utah v. Tyler James Robinson (2026).

Education

Born in Provo and raised in Spanish Fork, Grunander graduated from Spanish Fork High School. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from Brigham Young University in 1999 and his Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law in 2003. During law school, Chad worked for a non-profit group specializing in judicial reform in Latin America. He attended workshops in Costa Rica where lawyers and judges throughout Latin America were taught how to conduct opening statements, witness examinations and closing arguments.

Tyler Robinson Trial

Chad Grunander is a prosecutor in the trial of Tyler Robinson, the Utah man accused in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University.

Chad Grunander’s daughter, Hannah, was in attendance when Kirk was assassinated and texted her father in a family group chat that “someone” had been killed. On February 24, 2026, Fourth District Judge Tony Graf denied the defense’s Motion to Disqualify the Utah County Attorney’s Office from prosecuting this case.

Judge Graf ruled that the prosecutor’s daughter who attended the September 2025 Turning Point USA event had no relevant information that was not also known by numerous other attendees, and that her presence at the event had no impact on the charging decisions. The judge also ruled that her attendance did not create any personal interest that would affect the prosecution.
