Cavan Sullivan is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. He signed with the Philadelphia Union on May 9, 2024. On July 17, 2024, Cavan became the youngest player in MLS history and the youngest to debut in any major professional U.S. sports league. He made his debut at 14 years and 293 days old. He came on as a substitute in the 85th minute in the Union’s 5-1 win against the New England Revolution.

Cavan joined the Union on a league-record homegrown contract in May 2024, becoming the Union’s youngest-ever first-team player and the fifth-youngest first-teamer in MLS history. English Premier League side Manchester City was also involved in the deal, and Cavan will join the team at age 18.

Cavan joined the Philadelphia Union Academy in 2020 and quickly progressed through the Pro Player Pathway. He has featured for Union Academy’s U15 MLS NEXT team, U17 MLS NEXT team, and Philadelphia Union II MLS NEXT Pro team. He debuted in March 2024 in Major League Soccer’s developmental league, MLS Next Pro. On the international stage, Cavan led the U.S. under-15s to a 2023 CONCACAF U-15 Championship, earning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Cavan Sullivan’s parents, Brendan and Heike Sullivan, both played soccer at University of Pennsylvania. They first met in the athletic treatment room after Brendan transferred from Columbia. Brendan teaches at YSC Academy. Heike is a first generation American. Her mother, Sultana, is Bangladeshi and her father, the late, legendary UPenn professor Klaus Krippendorff, was German.

Heike’s father, Klaus Krippendorf, was a distinguished professor at the Annenberg School for Communication. Brendan’s father, Larry Sullivan, played collegiately at Temple University before coaching Villanova Men’s Soccer, among a long list of other Philly area colleges and high schools.

Cavan Sullivan is the son of Brendan and Heike Sullivan. He currently lives in his parents’ Norristown home with his brother, Quinn Sullivan, a professional soccer player who plays for the Philadelphia Union, and twin brothers Declan and Ronan who are highschoolers at YSC Academy.

Sullivan’s family roots run deep in Philadelphia. “The one thing that I would say about our family is that we are Philadelphia, through and through. Our boys are all raised Philadelphia proper. We’re always in the city. We feel connected to the city itself. We’ve lived other places, but nothing’s been like Philly,” Sullivan’s parents, Brendan and Heike, told Philadelphia Union reporter Sage Hurley.
