Caroline Hawley is a British journalist. She has been a special Diplomatic correspondent for the BBC News channel since 2007. She started her journalism career, on Newsweek as the magazine’s Jerusalem correspondent from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, she joined the BBC serving as a newsroom journalist for the World Service, prior to being posted to Cairo in 1999 and Jordan around 2001.

Hawley was BBC’s Baghdad correspondent but was expelled from Iraq in 2002, but later returned to the country after Saddam Hussein was removed from power. In the year 2006, she was appointed as the BBC Middle East correspondent. During the Grand Hyatt in Amman bombing by Al-Qaeda in November 2005, Hawley was dining with her partner in the Grand Hyatt in Amman, but luckily they were unhurt.

She has reported different stories for the BBC’s Newsnight program among them an investigation into the sale of fake bomb detectors such as the ADE 651 and GT200 to Iraq and other countries. Hawley’s investigation led to the ban on UK exports of fake bomb detectors to Iraq and Afghanistan. On 23 April 2013, the founder of the company which made the ADE 651 Jim McCormick, was convicted of three counts of fraud at the Old Bailey in London and was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. The owner of the company Gary Bolton was also convicted on 26 July 2013 on two charges of fraud and was jailed for seven years. She attended Wycombe Abbey, an independent school for girls in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, she then went to Pembroke College, of Oxford University where she studied Arabic and Persian.
