Carli Kierny, born Carli Lynn Kierny, is a judge for Department 2 of the Nevada 8th Judicial District Court. She was elected to the bench in November 2020 and assumed office on January 4, 2021, for a 6-year term, ending on January 4, 2027. She’s up for reelection on November 3, 2026.
Before taking the bench in Department 2 of District Court, Judge Kierny spent the last 10 years with the Clark County Public Defender’s Office, including five years on the sexual assault team. She served as the public defender representative on the countywide Criminal Justice Coordination Committee dedicated to improving probation outcomes.
Judge Kierny began her legal career as a public defender in Champaign County, Illinois, trying dozens of misdemeanor and felony cases. She also served as a volunteer with the SafeNest PS 417 program to provide resources to prevent lethal domestic violence incidents. As a law student, she tried several cases as a clerk with the Cook County Homicide Task Force and worked on the exoneration of a man who was wrongfully convicted as a student with the Chicago-Kent Law Clinic.
Judge Kierny received a bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003, and a Juris Doctor degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2008, according to her official bio.

Tupac Shakur Murder Trial
Judge Carli Kierny is presiding over the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the killing of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996. Davis, a one-time leader of the South Side Compton Crips gang, was arrested in Sept. 2023 and charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. He has been in custody ever since.
Davis is the only person ever charged in connection with Shakur’s death. Judge Kierny has ruled the jury will be able to hear about the book Davis published and his previous police interviews. He has pleaded not guilty.
