Briony May Williams Hand – Briony May Williams Disability

Great British Bake Off star Briony May Williams has a disability – her left-hand stops at the wrist.

During her time in the tent on the 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off, Briony turned down the offer of using special equipment, saying she wanted to be treated the same as everyone else.

“It’s not that I’m embarrassed about it or ashamed of it in any way,” she said. “I want to be there on my own merit and I don’t want people to think that I’m getting special treatment.

“It was almost kind of trying to prove that just because you’ve got a disability, you can do just as well as anyone else.”

In 2021 and 2022, Briony was named on The Shaw Trust’s Disability Power 100 List of the UK’s most influential disabled people.

On 31 July 2022, Briony got her tattoo redone on what she calls her “little hand” to mark the end of Disability Pride Month.

“So I got my tattoo redone on my little hand & as we reach the end of Disability Pride Month,” Briony wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to show it off because it is very closely linked to how I feel about my disability.”

“I first got it about 8 years ago when I really felt like I had finally accepted my hand then I had it made darker after Bake Off because that was the turning point for my becoming proud of my hand. I’ve had it adapted again by the lovely @bxbtattoo as it needed a touch up (I’ve also added a little heart next to it for Nora) and I absolutely love it. You should never be made to feel that your differences are ugly, shameful or ‘other’. You are beautiful, worthy and glorious, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise #disabilitypridemonth.”
