Brett Willis is an American criminal defense attorney. He is a founding member and attorney at Brett Willis Law LLC, a criminal defense law firm in Georgia. Brett has been practising criminal law exclusively since 2005.

Brett is a member of the inaugural class of Gideon’s Promise. He has served as an instructor for the Harvard Law School, the National Criminal Defense College, the Georgia Public Defender Council, and the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Bill Daniel Program.

In 2010, Brett was selected as one of ten lawyers in Georgia under the age of 40, “On the Rise” in a review by The Fulton County Daily Report. In 2013, he was featured in the HBO documentary Gideon’s Army. Also in 2013, he was awarded the prestigious “Foot Soldier” award by Gideon’s Promise. In 2014, Brett was named the “Defender of the Year” by the Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC).

He earned his J.D. from the University of Georgia in 2003 and his Master of Laws from New York University in 2004.

Suzanne Mericle Trial

Attorney Brett Willis is representing St. Simons Island dentist Suzanne Mericle, who is on trial in Hall County, Georgia, for the death of her boyfriend, James David Barron, on March 7, 2025. Investigators said she took him out through a door in the home they share on Lake Lanier, Georgia. Prosecutors claimed Mericle became ‘unhinged’ after learning Barron was having an affair and sending money to a woman named Lilia. Her defense claimed she acted in self-defense because Barron was abusive, First Coast News reported.
