Betty Bayo, real name Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, was a Kenyan gospel singer. She was best known for her hit songs “11th Hour,” “Jemedari,” and “Siyabonga.” Her other popular songs include Ngai Ti Mundu, Atasimama Nawe, Nikuhadwo, Gatho, Thiiri, Udahi, Ndîkerîria, Maneno, Agocwo, among others.
Born and raised in Kiambu, Betty attended Mihuti Primary School in Olkalou, Nyandarua County.She dropped out of school in Form Two due to financial difficulties. She worked as a househelp for about two years before her family managed to gather enough resources for her to resume her education, The Star reported. She rose to prominence in the early 2010s during the surge of contemporary Kikuyu gospel music.

Death
Gospel singer Betty Bayo passed away on November 10, 2025 at the age of 41. She was receiving treatment for blood cancer at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Her ex-husband, Pastor Victor Kanyari, told the Nation that the gospel musician had been battling leukaemia and was receiving treatment at the high dependency unit (HDU) at KNH.
The family confirmed the news during a press briefing held at KNH, where they detailed her final moments and the illness she had been battling.
“Together with the spouse (Hiram Gitau), the father of Betty’s children (Pastor Kanyari) and friends of Betty, we want to tell the members of the public that today [November 10, 2025], we have lost Betty Bayo,” a family spokesperson said during a media briefing at KNH.
The family spokesperson explained that the singer was first admitted to AAR Kiambu Road before being transferred to KNH on Friday, November 7, as her condition worsened. According to the family, Betty had been diagnosed with acute mild leukaemia, which resulted in excessive bleeding.
“Betty has been unwell since last week; she was diagnosed with acute mild cancer—leukemia. Betty was transferred to KNH on Friday as she was suffering from excessive bleeding. The doctors tried their best, but the will of God has prevailed,” the family said.
The family said plans were underway to move her body from Kenyatta National Hospital to the Kenyatta University Referral Mortuary.
“We are planning to move her body from Kenyatta National Hospital to the Kenyatta University Referral Mortuary, and all the other announcements on the plans to follow will come later,” they said.
Cause of Death
She died from complications arising from blood cancer (leukemia).
