eNCA confirmed his death in a statement: “It is with devastation, shock, and deep sorrow that eNCA announces that the channel’s Director of News Ben Said drowned while on holiday with his family in Mozambique on Monday afternoon.
“Ben had recently returned to South Africa from TRT World in Turkey and had re-joined the senior management team at eNCA. eMedia investments extends its sincerest condolences to his wife Nicky and his daughters Lily and Bella.”

eNCA’s Editor Jeremy Maggs paid tribute to Said in a statement: “Ben was one of the country’s best television journalists and his loss to the station is immense. Having just re-joined the station he was already making his presence felt across all aspects of the business. We are all in deep shock.”
The South African Government wrote on Twitter, “Government extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Ben Said. The death of a journalist of Said’s calibre makes the media profession poorer.”

The ANC said in a statement: “Ben Said was a highly respected journalist who conducted his craft with utmost professionalism and integrity. South Africans who value quality journalism were looking forward to the likes of Ben Said to help groom and empower young journalists who aspire to become the best in this field.”
Former Western Cape premier Helen Zille tweeted: “This is truly devastating news. Ben once worked with me at UCT. What a fine human being. Tragic.”
Patrick Conroy tweeted: “Devastated at the passing of my friend for 30 years. From students to radio and then TV. I can’t imagine working in media without you Ben.
