Anurag Aggarwal is a MasterChef UK 2023 semi-finalist and chartered accountant from Basildon in Essex. He was born and brought up in Gurgaon, India, and lived in Mumbai for two years. He moved to the UK in 2010. The 40-year-old now lives in Essex with his wife and two children.
How would you describe your style of cooking?
“My style of cooking is a fusion of Indian flavours with a modern presentation. I like to stick to my Indian roots; therefore, my food is always very vibrant, contains different textures, and is full of authentic flavours. I take a lot of inspiration in cooking from my late mom and mother nature itself. Which provides us everything, we just need to present it.”
What is your earliest cooking memory?
“Making a cup of tea (Indian Chai) for my mother at the age of 10.”
Why did you enter MasterChef?
“I am so passionate about food and it’s much more than just ingredients, recipes, or dishes. For me, it’s an expression of who I am in terms of my creativity. For the same reason I entered MasterChef, just to express myself as a passionate food enthusiast and learn from others.”
What is your food dream?
“My ultimate food dream is to open a fine dining Indian restaurant. However, for the time being, I want to learn and share my love of food, through a cook book, cooking and talking about my passion. Based on my own professional/personal journey so far, I feel very optimistic that if somebody REALLY wants to do something they first need to believe in it and just take the first steps then somehow everything else falls in place like magic.”

The Indian cook described how a “mid-life crisis” during the Covid-19 lockdowns led to his journey on BBC One’s MasterChef.
“You can call it a midlife crisis, something like that,” said the father-of-two. “I thought I love cooking, it’s more than a passion for me, it’s more than a hobby for me, and I started exploring what I can do. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be cooking in the show, it was more than a dream come true.”
