AJ Simpson is a competitor on Channel 4’s The Great Pottery Throw Down. AJ loved the thrill of taking part in The Great Pottery Throw Down 2022, which is hosted by Siobhán McSweeney and Ellie Taylor. AJ told The Press and Journal: “Walking in on the first day was like stepping into another world. We all had no idea what to expect, it was all so exciting and scary, there was a buzz in the air.”

In the third episode of The Great Pottery Throw Down, AJ was among 10 remaining potters facing the challenge of creating a piece based on an inanimate object from their hometown. AJ paid tribute to his hometown of Aberdeen by crafting a beautiful ceramic Brig o’ Balgownie. Brig o’ Balgownie is a 13th-century bridge spanning the River Don in Old Aberdeen. It is the oldest bridge in Scotland, built in 1320. The Great Pottery Throw Down judges Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller loved the detail on AJ’s Brig o’ Balgownie.

The Robert Gordon University design graduate fell in love with ceramics after starting a 3D design course at Gray’s School Of Art. AJ started by making pottery in his garden shed before moving to a local artist studio.

“Until recently I made my pottery in my garden shed, or rather I made pottery outside and stored my wheel and kiln in the shed which made making things in the winter quite… snowy,” said AJ. “Now I make my pottery from a local artist studio where I have a room that I share with my jeweller friend from uni, it is a brilliant community there, and much warmer.”
