Ahmed Abdalla is Head Chef at The Legacy, a fine dining restaurant at the Grand York. He is a contestant on Great British Menu 2025. He was crowned Chef of the Year at the 2023 Be Inclusive Hospitality (BIH) awards. In 2024 Ahmed reached the semi finals of the National Chef Of The Year competition.
Ahmed grew up in a female led household, and watching his mum and sisters cook gave him the drive to pursue a career in hospitality immediately after finishing school.
Abdalla’s professional background includes numerous iconic restaurants in Yorkshire and beyond such as York restaurant, Skosh, Yorebridge House in The Dales and stages at Restaurant Hywel Jones – Lucknam Park and Whatley Manor’s restaurant – The Dining Room.
Ahmed heads up the kitchen brigade at The Grand, York’s fine dining restaurant, Legacy. In the short time since the restaurant opened in 2022, Ahmed has led the restaurant to being awarded 3 AA Rosettes at the prestigious AA Hospitality Awards 2023.
In October 2023 Ahmed was crowned Chef of the Year at the Be Inclusive Hospitality (BIH) awards.

Head Chef Ahmed Abdalla is a contestant on the 20th anniversary series of The Great British Menu, judged by Andi Oliver, Tom Kerridge, Ed Gamble and Lorna McNee. This year’s theme of ‘Great Britons’ sees chefs draw inspiration from their choice of important people, from ancient to modern history, who have come from their area.
Hailing from London, Ahmed has made York his home and is passionate about the city, Yorkshire, and the produce that surrounds him. He will be representing the North East and Yorkshire region on the BBC cooking show alongside Scott John-Hodgson, head chef at Solstice, Minal Patel, head chef at Prashad, and Callum Leslie, executive chef at The Black Swan in Oldstead.
He said: “It’s an honour to represent the North East & Yorkshire in this year’s Great British Menu. The theme of historical figures from the past inspired me to be creative and produce some incredible dishes. Competing alongside such talented chefs is a privilege, and I can’t wait for the viewers to see my creations come to life.
“Securing a spot on Great British Menu marked the start of an incredible journey. Throughout the competition I dedicated myself to creating groundbreaking dishes designed to wow the judges, focusing on the overarching theme of historical figures from the past.”
