Sello Motloung was a South African actor, presenter and MC. The Meadowlands native is best known for his roles in Backstage, Mamello and Ring of Lies. He also appeared in the role of King of Bafokeng in Showmax’s The Wife. He recently starred in the film uBab’ Stivovo.

Other television shows he has appeared in include Isidingo, Madam and Eve, Soul City, Scoop Schoombie, Generations, Justice for All, Orlando, Secret in my Bosom, Milestone, Tarzan, Nna Sajene Kokobela, Khululeka, The Lab, Jozi-H, Jacob’s Cross, Wild at Heart, Interrogation Room, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and 90 Plein Street.

Sello also acted in the Canadian mini-series Human Cargo, in 2004. In 2012 he was the lead role in an episode of the e.tv drama series eKasi: Our Stories. He has also acted in numerous feature films including Chikin Biznis, The Long Run, Ollie, Zulu Love Letter, Skilpoppe, Man to Man, Faith’s Corner, Jerusalema, Invictus, Chanda’s Secrets, Tirza and How to Steal 2 Million. He was nominated for an M-Net All-Africa Film Award in the category Best Supporting Actor for his role in Chikin Biznis, in 1998.

The 53-year-old also has an extensive theatre resume having appeared in dozens of productions including Street Cleaners (1990), The Awakening (1991), The Good Woman of Sharkville (1996, for which he was nominated for a Vita Award for Best Supporting Actor), The Cherry Orchard (1997), Master Harold And The Boys (1998), Cold Stone Jug (2004) and Socks & Toothpaste, in 2006.

Veteran actor Sello Motloung passed away on Sunday 15 September 2024 aged 53, a statement shared by his family confirmed.

“We are devastated to inform you of the sudden passing of Ntate Sello Motloung on Sunday 15 September,” the family statement said. “His family is in shock and we ask that you give them space at this time. Sello will forever be remembered as one of our legends and we will miss him tremendously.”

Confirming the news of his death with News24, his management, Artist Connection, said his family are still in shock and are processing the news. “He collapsed at home, and his wife took him to the hospital, and he passed at about five yesterday.”

The SABC said in a statement shared on social media: “The SABC is profoundly saddened by the passing of Ntate Sello Motloung. His significant role in shaping the entertainment landscape will never be forgotten. The SABC extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans.”

Actors Spaces wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “A heartfelt tribute to Sello Motloung, a beloved actor and artist who graced us with his talent, passion and unwavering dedication. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace bra Sello. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.”

Actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi said: “Devastated to say the least. I’m not sure what is happening, but I will cherish the last laughs and fun we had in battle on set last Friday. My General: R.I.P. Sello My condolences to the legend’s family. Kubuhlungu. Uxolo.”
